Former President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians to reignite their sense of patriotism and draw inspiration from the legacy of the late Lt. Gen. Arnold Quainoo, a former Chief of Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces.
Speaking at the final funeral rites of the late military leader at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Burma Camp on Friday, February 7, Mahama commended Lt. Gen. Quainoo’s dedication to national service and his commitment to the country.
A Legacy of Patriotism and Integrity
The late Lt. Gen. Quainoo was the first commander of the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) and played a pivotal role in peacekeeping efforts during the Liberian civil war in 1990. His leadership and service left a lasting impact on both Ghana and the West African region.
In his tribute, Mahama reflected on Quainoo’s unwavering patriotism, describing him as a man of principle and integrity who prioritized service over material wealth.
“He is the last of his generation that is past who believed in the love of country, they were not given into materialism. They were principled, and they did things out of patriotism. It is very different from the generation today. Everything is driven by material wealth. So, as we gather to say farewell to this man, may his life be an inspiration, thus, we can recapture love for country and patriotism,” he stated.
