Renowned economist and former Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), Professor Stephen Adei, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for his strong start in office, praising his performance during the first 100 days.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Thursday, March 6, Prof. Adei described Mahama’s initial months as impressive, comparing them to past administrations. “His Excellency, the President has done very well in the first 100 days. I mean, government after government. I was too young to have observed the first 100 days of Nkrumah, but thereafter, when he was overthrown, I was in my final year at training college. Since then, I have observed the early days of every government, and I would give him a very high score for what he has done,” he noted.

However, he cautioned that the real test of leadership goes beyond the early phase, as the government must tackle key economic challenges. “This is the honeymoon stage, and I will give him a good score. But the real challenge lies in stabilising the economy, generating revenue, and addressing key issues such as Ghana’s limited gains from its mineral resources and the fight against illegal mining [galamsey],” he added.

Prof. Adei acknowledged the challenges ahead but remained hopeful about Mahama’s leadership. “So far, he has done very well, and we wish him the best because Ghana cannot continue resetting the agenda,” he stated.

While praising Mahama’s early achievements, Prof. Adei stressed the need for strong economic policies to ensure long-term stability and sustainable growth.
