Several major roads in Accra remain in darkness, sparking safety concerns among residents and motorists, despite Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Akweley Ocloo’s commitment to restoring 70% of the region’s streetlights.
During a press briefing following her swearing-in, the minister assured the public that efforts were underway to address the issue, emphasizing that proper street lighting is essential for security and road safety. She noted that poor visibility at night has contributed to an increase in road accidents and crime, particularly in busy areas.
“The minister promised that 70 percent of the streetlights will be fixed in her first 50 days in office,” yet significant progress has yet to be seen. Frustrated residents and business owners in affected areas say the persistent darkness makes them more vulnerable to theft and other crimes.
A major point of concern is that even the main road leading to Jubilee House, the seat of government, lacks functional streetlights. This has raised doubts about the urgency and prioritization of the minister’s promise, as key government infrastructure remains affected.
