Eighteen members of the separatist group, The Homeland Study Group Foundation, have been remanded by a court in Yendi in the Northern Region, Monday.
All 18 will reappear in court on January 9, 2020, police said in a statement.
The suspects were arrested by a joint police and military team at Dipa, a community in Bimbila, on Friday, December 27, 2019 following an intelligence.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects had begun processes to recruiting some youth into the group —seeking to break away from Ghana.
Northern Regional Police Spokesperson, DSP Yusif Tanko said the suspects have been charged with conspiracy to commit treason.
Lawyer for the accused, Alidu Rauf was hopeful that his clients would be released on the next adjourned date.
The development comes after some traditional leaders in Northern Ghana rejected calls to join the Homeland Study Group Foundation.
Led by 85-year-old Komi Kudzordzi, the group has been campaigning for secession of some parts of Ghana into an independent ‘Western Togoland’ state.
More than 50 persons have so far been arrested as police declare leader of the group, Komi Kudzordzi, wanted.
