The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has confirmed that there were no casualties resulting from the heavy rainstorm that lashed parts of Accra on Sunday, May 18.

According to Chief Disaster Control Officer Mohammed Jafaro, although several areas were affected by the downpour, including Adenta, Tema, and Kaneshie, no deaths or injuries had been reported as of the latest updates.

“So far, we have received many distress calls—residents in Adenta, Tema, and around Kaneshie calling for help—so that is why we have dispatched teams. But no casualty as I am talking to you now,” Jafaro stated during an interview with Channel One Newsroom.

He explained that NADMO’s emergency response teams were quickly deployed to assist affected residents in these locations.

Jafaro also pointed out that the flooding was largely due to long-standing issues with poor sanitation and inadequate infrastructure in some communities.

“Most of the problems we have observed are that there is a lack of drainage in some communities, some of the areas too are filled with filth… In some of the areas also we have engineering defects,” he explained.

In light of the recurring floods, NADMO has called on the public to remain cautious, especially in low-lying areas, and to stay away from flood-prone zones during and after heavy rains to ensure their safety.
