The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has suspended all political activities in the Ejura constituency of the Ashanti region for the next one week, officials say.

The directive takes immediate effect as the party mourns the death of seven of its supporters who got involved in an accident over the weekend, a deputy General Secretary for the NDC in the Ejura constituency, Samuel Kwa-Sam said in an interview with dailymailgh.com.

“So until a formal communique is out, no party faithful should organize a rally in the [Ejura] constituency for the next one week. The main motive is to sympathize and console the bereaved,” Kwa-Sam explained.

At least seven persons died in the crash involving a truck carrying NDC supporters at Ejura in the Ashanti Region.

Eight Accident victims in critical condition

Four bodies have since been buried according to Islamic laws, while two others are being preserved at the morgue.

More than 20 have been discharged while eight others have been referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching and the Duayaw Nkwanta Hospitals respectively.

“The executives as we speak, we are numbering over twenty and I am at the hospital now… I think everything is stable and the promise to foot their bills has been done” Kwa-Sam stated.

Background

The accident occurred at Frante near the Ejura/Sekyedumase constituency of the Ashanti Region Saturday – 24 hours after a similar incident in the New Edubiase constituency.

On Sunday, an NDC supporter was also killed during a campaign walk in the Ellembele constituency of the Western Region. The party has since suspended its campaign to mourn the dead.
