The Greater Accra Regional Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Anthony Nukpenu, has expressed deep sorrow following the death of the party’s former Greater Accra Regional Chairman, Joseph Ade Coker.

Mr. Coker passed away on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at the Bank Hospital after a brief illness. His passing has been described by party members as a major loss to the NDC.

Speaking on Channel One’s Newsroom with Charles Owusu Kumi on Sunday, June 1, Mr. Nukpenu said the news was both shocking and heartbreaking. He noted that the late chairman’s death has hit the party hard, especially those who worked closely with him.

Describing Mr. Coker as a unifier and a committed leader, Nukpenu praised his inclusive leadership style and strong emphasis on consultation in party decisions. He recalled Mr. Coker’s active involvement in party affairs and his frequent appearances in the media where he engaged the public on national issues.

“He was always on the airwaves, holding the government accountable. Just two weeks ago, he was on several radio stations. No one expected this. Doctors tried, the family did their best, the party stood by him, pastors prayed—but when God calls, no one can stop it,” Mr. Nukpenu said.

He added, “This is a painful moment for the NDC. We have lost a true pillar, someone who gave his all to the party since 2009. For some of us who were close to him, this is not easy at all.”

The party is expected to release funeral arrangements in the coming days.

Joseph Ade Coker was first elected as the NDC’s Greater Accra Regional Chairman in 2009 and served three terms. He was well respected across the party, particularly at the grassroots level. He lost his position in the 2022 internal elections to Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore.
