There is tension in the Bono region suburb of New Dormaa as residents stage protest against vehicular knockdowns, Dailymailgh.com has gathered.

It followed the death of a young boy who was knocked down and killed on that stretch of the Sunyani-Dormaa highway Tuesday evening, sparking spontaneous protests by some residents of the area.

The angry residents, including the young and the old mounted road blocks as they set lorry tyres ablaze to express their anger over recent deaths and the bad nature of their road.

Dailymailgh.com‘s Bono Regional correspondent reports that it could have turned violent but for the timely intervention of armed police and military personnel who responded quickly to the scene.

The Sunyani-Dormaa highway had been cut off by the angry residents leaving motorists stranded at the time the security personnel arrived at the scene.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service have also been deployed to douse the fire as police remove blockades to allow free vehicular traffic.

It is not immediately known whether an arrest has been made.

Security had been beefed up in the enclave as at 23.00 GMT local time as our reporter was leaving the scene.
