Editor of Newscenta newspaper, Elvis Darko, has criticised the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for handling sensitive investigations through the media.

Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Monday, June 2, Darko warned that doing investigations publicly could harm the OSP’s image.

“If you choose to investigate in the media instead of the courts, it can backfire and hurt your reputation,” he said. “The media prefers hearing court rulings—not just what investigators are saying.”

His comments follow the OSP’s recent directive for former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to appear before it on Monday, June 2. The office even threatened to use an INTERPOL Red Notice to extradite him if he failed to show up.

However, sources close to Mr. Ofori-Atta say he cannot appear because of a medical emergency. His lawyers have submitted documents to both the OSP and the Human Rights Court showing that he is receiving treatment and is scheduled for surgery.

Meanwhile, Ken Ofori-Atta’s lawyer, Frank Davies, says his client is not dodging the OSP. Speaking on Joy FM, he stressed that Mr. Ofori-Atta’s health issues are genuine and have been known for some time.

“If I planned to see you tomorrow, but I suddenly fall ill tonight, would I still be able to come?” Davies asked. “Why is it so hard for people to accept that he’s facing a serious health issue?”
