The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has issued a strong warning to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Greater Accra Region, stating that legal steps will be taken against any assembly that fails to take down unauthorized billboards placed on road medians by Monday, June 2, 2025.
This stern directive comes after a scheduled meeting meant to chart a path for compliance was largely boycotted by the targeted assemblies. According to the NRSA, the gathering was organized to engage stakeholders on removing the billboards and possibly extend an earlier 21-day deadline, but most of the intended participants failed to attend.
Speaking to journalists, NRSA Director-General Abraham Amaliba expressed disappointment over the situation, describing the attitude of the local assemblies as uncooperative and dismissive.
“We sent out invitations through the Ministry of Local Government to all relevant assemblies in Accra. Unfortunately, some misunderstood the scope of the meeting and thought it was for all assemblies nationwide, which led to representatives attending from outside Greater Accra,” Amaliba explained.
“Shockingly, those who were actually expected to be present – the assemblies in Accra – did not attend. We view their absence as a clear sign of refusal to cooperate, and as a result, we will begin legal proceedings against those who fail to comply with the directive.”
He further revealed that the meeting was intended to provide additional time for assemblies to act, but their absence has forced the Authority’s hand.
“This tells us they are not serious about addressing the issue. Since they have chosen to ignore our efforts, we will now address the matter in court,” he added.
The NRSA maintains that the removal of these unauthorized billboards is essential for public safety, as such structures pose serious risks to motorists and road users across the region.
