The management of the National Service Scheme has summoned its Ashanti Regional Director Alex Opoku-Mensah for questioning, a statement has confirmed.

Mr. Opoku Mensah is being investigated after he verbally assaulted a nurse at the Manhyia District Hospital on Sunday (November 27).

“Management has, since the development, invited the officer for preliminary investigations into the incident”, the statement indicated.

While describing the incident as “unfortunate” the management reiterated its commitment and assurances to the public and the nursing fraternity of our dedication to getting the matter resolved”.

Apologies

The development has generated widespread agitation among the staff of the Manhyia District Hospital forcing the politician to issue an apology.

‘This has never been my style, OMENS as he is affectionately called stated in a Facebook post…” but for a genuine reason to mediate a persistent issue between my daughter(Doctor) and a colleague nurse who I also consider my daughter.”

“I do apologize for any mishap and assure all, there shall not be a repetition of such”, he said adding: “I look forward to maintaining a cordial relationship between any affected person.”

Not convinced

But it appears the nurses and midwife fraternity is not convinced. The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) says it will not back down on its earlier decision to strike should Mr. Opoku Mensah remain at post after 72 hours.

Ashanti Regional Vice Chairman of the GRNMA, Philemon Adu Brempong, who spoke with dailymailgh.com after an emergency meeting with managers of the facility said the traumatized health worker is being given psychological support.

He insists justice will be served when the government appointee is sacked.

“We are now accommodating her. She is being given some form of psychological support… I think the father [Mr. Opoku Mensah] has exhibited gross ignorance in the public domain and we are calling for his dismissal. We will not relent in seeking the welfare of our members. And the justice we are seeking is for the man to be sacked”, he stated.
