The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called for stronger collaboration between individuals and institutions to tackle poverty, which he identified as a major barrier to children’s education in Ghana.
He emphasized the need for increased investment to enhance support for teachers and improve educational infrastructure, noting that these efforts are vital for securing the nation’s future. Reflecting on the achievements of the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation — which marks 25 years of service — the Asantehene described the journey as both humbling and inspiring.
The Foundation was envisioned 26 years ago, when Otumfuo ascended the Golden Stool, driven by a commitment to uplift Asanteman and Ghana through dignity, resilience, and equal opportunities.
In its formative years, the Foundation made its first major contribution by providing scholarships to 600 students across Ghana’s three main public universities. Over time, the Asantehene expanded his vision, launching major projects across education, health, water and sanitation, and the preservation of culture and heritage. In 2009, these efforts were unified under the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation.
Throughout its existence, the Foundation has focused on supporting vulnerable individuals and communities both within Asanteman and across Ghana.
Speaking at the Foundation’s 25th anniversary celebration, where an Endowment Fund was also unveiled, Otumfuo urged all Ghanaians to contribute to building a brighter future.
“I urge you not only to give but to partner with us. Let your support tonight be a lasting legacy — a bridge between what we have accomplished and what we aim to achieve. Let’s ensure that no Ghanaian child is deprived of education due to poverty,” he appealed.
The newly launched Endowment Fund aims to secure the long-term sustainability of the Foundation’s initiatives. Launched by former President John Agyekum Kufuor, the Fund seeks to raise ₵50 million over the next five years, with the goal of generating returns to finance ongoing projects.
“This Fund is designed to shield the Foundation from uncertainties that could threaten its mission in the future,” Kufuor explained.
Supporters of the Fund were recognised and celebrated, with donors classified into bronze, silver, gold, and diamond categories, and presented with certificates and plaques in appreciation of their contributions.
