Power FM broadcaster Oheneba Boamah Bennie was on Monday (21 February) released from jail having served a two-week sentence over claims against President Akufo-Addo and judges.

He was jailed on 8 February by the High Court in Accra after the Attorney General charged him with contempt.

The court presided over by Justice Elfreda Dankyi also fined the broadcaster an amount of GHS 3000.

Background
Oheneba Boamah Bennie was arrested in December 2020 for allegedly issuing a series of threats against the president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the police confirmed in a statement.

Boamah, the co-host of the Inside Politics Show on the Accra-based Power FM, was invited for questioning at the Criminal Investigation Department on 14 December 2020, but was subsequently detained over threats he issued during a Facebook live interaction after the results of Election 2020 went in favour of Akufo-Addo.

“The suspect, 36 years old, has been cautioned on the offences of offensive conduct conducive to breaches of the peace and publication of false news, contrary to Sections 207 and 208(1), respectively, of the Criminal and Other Offences Act 1960 (Act 29),” the police said in a statement after questioning Boamah.

It added: “The suspect is being held for allegedly insulting and issuing series of threats to the President of the Republic of Ghana and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, H E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in a video which he shared on his Facebook page.”
