President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his strong commitment to tackling illegal mining, acknowledging the complexity of the issue but assuring Ghanaians that his administration will remain steadfast in addressing the crisis.

Speaking during the 2025 May Day celebrations at Black Star Square in Accra, President Mahama emphasized that he was fully aware of the scale of the galamsey problem even before taking office and never expected a quick fix.

“I never believed that solving the galamsey issue would be easy. I knew from the start that it wouldn’t be resolved in just a few months,” he said. “But that does not mean we will give up. The fight will continue.”

He highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts and stressed that security agencies are well-prepared to confront illegal mining operations across the country.

“Our brave Armed Forces and other security services are ready and capable. We are committed to going after those companies and individuals whose actions are damaging our environment and contaminating our water sources,” the President added.

President Mahama’s remarks come at a time when the nation continues to grapple with the environmental and health impacts of galamsey, especially in forested areas and along key rivers. His pledge reflects a call for sustained national action against one of Ghana’s most serious environmental challenges.
