Sammy Gyamfi, the Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) and National Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has addressed public concerns surrounding staffing changes at the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC).
Speaking on The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV on Wednesday, April 23, Gyamfi firmly dismissed rumors that current PMMC employees had been replaced by unqualified recruits.
He clarified that the changes did not affect permanent staff, stating, “So far, I’m the only new employee of GoldBod. Because we’re in the process of recruiting additional staff to augment the staff of PMMC, which we have taken over.”
Gyamfi acknowledged that some contract workers, particularly those based at PMMC’s outposts, had been laid off—but insisted the move was based on operational needs rather than political motivations or favoritism.
“All permanent workers of the PMMC are still workers of the PMMC. We had to painfully lay some workers off. But those were contract workers and also PMMC workers in our out stations, and they were laid off purely on the grounds of redundancy,” he explained.
The restructuring is part of broader reforms aimed at revitalizing Ghana’s minerals sector. According to GoldBod, these changes are intended to improve efficiency and ensure that the nation’s mineral wealth benefits the broader population.
