Former Finance Minister Seth Terkper has been appointed as the Presidential Advisor on the Economy. In his new role, he will provide strategic guidance to the President on key economic matters, including fiscal policy, debt management, and strategies to drive economic recovery.
This appointment comes at a critical time, as Ghana grapples with significant economic challenges, such as rising inflation, public debt concerns, and currency depreciation. Terkper’s expertise places him at the forefront of efforts to stabilize the economy and promote sustainable growth.
Terkper will work closely with Finance Minister-designate Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson to implement a range of economic policies under the John Mahama administration.
With a distinguished career that includes serving as Finance Minister from 2013 to 2017, Terkper brings invaluable experience to his new position. During his tenure, he played a key role in implementing fiscal reforms, improving public financial management, and stabilizing the national economy.
He was instrumental in negotiating Ghana’s Extended Credit Facility (ECF) program with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and introducing measures like the Energy Sector Levy Act (ESLA) to address energy sector debt.
The decision to appoint Terkper underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging seasoned expertise to tackle the nation’s economic difficulties. His vast experience is expected to help shape policies aimed at fostering economic growth, stabilizing the macroeconomic environment, and boosting investor confidence.
