Ghanaians resident in Germany, who are currently stranded in Ghana as a result of border closure, will be evacuated to the European country on Sunday, June 7, 2020, officials say.

This was after Ghanaian authorities gave clearance for the exercise, according to German-based television network, DNT.

The aircraft will arrive in Accra from Riga International Airport in Latvia the night before and layover prior to the flight the following day.

Travelers on this flight will be subjected to strict baggage standards of one check-in baggage of not more than 24kg and one carry-on bag not exceeding 5kg.

The cost per head is 750 Euros, which is one of the cheapest of the evacuation flights, the report said.

The flight is scheduled to depart the Kotoka International Airport at 11am, arrive at Algiers International Airport at 3:45pm, then depart at 4:30 pm to arrive in Dusseldorf at 7:15 pm.

After a long and arduous set of logistical arrangements, the presidency approved the evacuation in a letter dated June 2 authorizing the flight.

“By a copy of this letter,” the letter signed by the president’s Executive Secretary read, “the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, Ghana immigration Service and the National Security Coordinator are to grant the necessary permits/passes to enable them travel.”

Ghana announced border closures earlier in March after the country recorded first two Covid-19 cases.

This was to prevent the spread of the virus since the first two cases were imported into the country.

This has stranded many foreign nationals as they brace with time to be repatriated to their home countries.

Over 200 Ghanaians were, however, deported from Kuwait in May. 35 of them tested positive for Covid-19 after going through a mandatory self-isolation.

They have since been isolated and being managed by health workers.
