Suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has strongly criticized the ongoing proceedings by the Justice Pwamang Committee, which is reviewing petitions for her removal from office. In a supplementary affidavit submitted to the Supreme Court, she described the process as a “mockery of justice” and a calculated effort to remove her unfairly.

Justice Torkornoo claims that the proceedings violate her basic human rights and dignity. She argues that the treatment she has received has been both degrading and inhumane, stripping her of constitutional protections meant to safeguard her position and person.

She also took issue with the location of the hearings, noting that unlike similar past cases held at the Judicial Service’s Court Complex, this one is being conducted in a high-security area. She called the new setting inappropriate and intimidating.

Another key concern raised in the affidavit is the committee’s failure to disclose the legal grounds or standards used to determine that there was a case to answer. Justice Torkornoo argues that this lack of transparency makes it difficult for her to know her rights or prepare a proper defense.

She further alleges that the committee continued to schedule hearing dates without informing her or coordinating with her lawyer, who was unavailable on the selected date. She also disputes the decision to allow witnesses to testify on behalf of the petitioners, rather than requiring the petitioners to appear in person.

The affidavit outlines what she describes as harsh treatment, including being denied access to her phones, undergoing invasive searches, and being separated from her husband and children during the proceedings. In contrast, she says the petitioners and their legal team were allowed to keep their phones and received favorable treatment.

Justice Torkornoo argues that these conditions, together with the decision to hold the hearings at the Osu Castle, were intentionally designed to cause her emotional stress and exert psychological pressure.
