The taxi driver who was seen in a viral video driving with a Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) officer clinging to his bonnet, has been granted a GHc20,000 bail by a court in the Eastern Regional capital, Koforidua.

This was after a bail application by his lawyer was granted by the court at his first appearance on Monday, March 2, 2020.

The suspect, 36-year-old Daniel Ofosu, is facing charges of dangerous driving and resisting arrest.

According to the police, the suspect, who was on the wanted list of the police for multiple traffic infractions resisted arrest and sped off when he was signaled by one Sergeant Prepah of police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD).

The suspect has, however, denied the claim.

The case has, however, been adjourned to Tuesday, March 31, 2020, as investigations continue, spokesperson for the Ghana Police Service, Deputy Superintendent of Police Shiela Abayie-Buckman confirmed in an interview on an Accra-based TV channel.

Policeman ran over by another driver

Meanwhile, the police is appealing to the public to help find a driver who knocked down and killed another officer in a similar incident last week.

The policeman was killed by a commercial minibus (trotro) driver after trying to stop the driver.

The trotro was being pursued by the policeman for soliciting for passengers, engaging in unauthorised parking and obstructing other road users at Madina Zongo junction.

Sergeant Moses Appiah stood in front of the vehicle and ordered the driver to disembark, a police incident report sighted by dailymailgh read.

But without any provocation, the driver ran his vehicle over the police officer in anger, according to police.

Sergeant Appiah was dragged by the vehicle for about 54.50 metres leaving him with the severe injuries.

He was confirmed dead later at the 37 Military Hospital.

Although the driver’s mate has been arrested, the Ghana Police Service has declared the trotro driver wanted, since he fled into hiding after the incident.

“The driver is still on the run, his pictures have been published widely and we are still asking the public for help to bring the suspect to face the law”, Police Spokesperson, Sheila Abayie-Buckman said.
