A group of concerned youth in Tema staged a protest at the premises of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, calling on President John Dramani Mahama to appoint a native of the area as the next Mayor.

The demonstrators made their stance clear through the burning of car tyres and the beating of drums, signaling their disapproval of the direction the mayoral appointment is reportedly taking.

Their protest follows growing speculation that Ebi Bright is being considered for the position, despite earlier reports that Patience Ankamah Addo was leading the race for the role.

Speaking to the media during the protest, Dora Sappor, a vocal member of the youth, strongly opposed the possible nomination of Ebi Bright.

“We are here with a heavy heart to register our displeasure. We are hearing that Ebi Bright is to be made the Mayor of Tema, but that is not going to happen. She was not even part of the whole process, so why are they bringing her to be the mayor? This is something we will not understand,” she said.

Sappor emphasized that the demand for an indigene to be appointed is shared not only by the youth but also by traditional leaders in the community.

“This is the only demand of the youth of Tema East and the traditional leaders,” she added.
