Supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) gathered in large numbers at the home of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako—popularly known as Chairman Wontumi—after a failed attempt by officers from the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) and the Ghana Police Service to arrest him on Friday, May 23, 2025.

The crowd, which swelled as the day progressed, converged on the residence to protest the deployment of heavily armed officers who had earlier encircled the premises. Although the reason for the attempted arrest remains unclear, Chairman Wontumi, who was inside during the operation, reportedly assured the security officers that he would respond to their invitation by Monday, May 26.

Amid chants and strong resistance from party members, tensions heightened until the NIB allegedly ordered a complete withdrawal of officers from the location. Despite the reduced police presence, loyal supporters of the regional chairman have continued to monitor the area around his residence.

Speaking to the press, NPP Regional Secretary Kwame Adom-Appiah, who also serves on Chairman Wontumi’s legal team, strongly criticized the approach taken by the security agencies.

“If you’re planning to arrest someone and show up with around 20 vehicles, when that individual isn’t accused of plotting a coup or attempting to overthrow the government, it’s completely unwarranted,” he stated.

“That level of deployment is not just excessive—it’s a drain on state resources. A simple summons would have been enough, and if that failed, there are legal procedures in place to enforce an arrest appropriately,” he added.
