At least three persons have been killed in a premix fuel explosion in Ghana’s Central Region town of Elmina, Friday.

Five others who sustained various degrees of injuries are receiving treatment at the University of Cape Coast Hospital, local media reported.

The incident happened at about 13:00 GMT on Friday, reportedly as the petroleum product caught fire during a routine discharge.

The blast sent a huge inferno which spread through other neighbourhoods —destroying many properties in the process.

Firefighters in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo- Abirem District are yet to officially brief local media about the cause of the fire as investigations start.

The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the University of Cape Coast Hospital morgue for preservation.

This is the second fire incident recorded within the last 24 hours.

At least five tankers belonging to some oil marketing companies caught fire at Buipe in the Savannah Region.

The incident occurred just before 21:00 GMT, near a Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation (BOST) depot.

Three persons were injured in the process.

Officials at BOST said in an interview that investigations are underway to ascertain the cause of the fire.

In June 2015, about 150 died in a twin disaster involving fire and flood at a petrol station in the nation’s capital, Accra.
