Beginning Saturday, May 24, 2025, transport fares across the country will be reduced by 15%, following successful discussions between transport unions and the Ministry of Transport.

This decision comes as a response to recent improvements in the economy, especially the consistent strengthening of the Ghanaian cedi against the US dollar. The appreciation of the cedi has helped bring down fuel prices, making it possible for transport operators to pass on some relief to passengers.

The move also follows an appeal from the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association, which encouraged its members to lower prices of auto parts due to the favourable exchange rate.

Speaking to Citi News, the Industrial Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Abass Imoro, confirmed the upcoming fare reduction and described it as a step in the right direction.

“We have finally agreed to reduce lorry fares by 15%, but it will take effect from Saturday,” he said. “Although currently, spare parts sellers have promised to reduce some of their prices for now, which hasn’t taken effect, and none of the lubricants which went up has been reduced currently, but we decided to peg the reduction at 15%.”

The adjustment is expected to bring some financial relief to commuters amid the gradually improving economic conditions.
