The Ministry of Transport has begun expansion works at Terminal 2 of the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) as part of efforts to reduce overcrowding at Terminal 3 and enhance the airport’s overall efficiency.

The revamped Terminal 2 is expected to handle both domestic and international flights, with operations planned to roll out in two phases. This development was jointly announced by the Ministry of Transport and airport management.

The initiative comes in response to rising passenger numbers and increasing congestion at Terminal 3, Ghana’s main international terminal. Authorities believe the move will help improve passenger flow and ease pressure on the existing infrastructure.

During a recent visit to the airport, Transport Minister Joseph Nikpe Bukari emphasized the significance of the expansion, noting that it is part of a broader strategy to increase the airport’s capacity for passengers and cargo.

“At peak hours, Terminal 3 experiences serious congestion,” the Minister explained. “We’ve divided Terminal 2 into two functional areas — one for domestic flights, and the section we’re standing in now, for international flights. This way, we can transfer some of the load from Terminal 3, giving travelers more space and comfort.”

The Ministry is optimistic that the upgrade will not only improve travel experiences but also enhance airport operations and support future growth at Ghana’s busiest aviation hub.
