The Ghana Education Service (GES) has asked a Senior House Master and his colleague at the KNUST Senior High School (SHS) in Kumasi to step aside over the death of a student in the school.
It comes a day after news broke that the headmistress of the school, Felicia Asamoah Dankwaa, was also interdicted after the death of Master Sam Leonard. His death sparked anger amongst students who went rioting and destroyed public and private property.
The Senior HouseMaster has been identified as Owusu Ansah Seth while his colleague named as Anthony Awotwe, who is the housemaster for the Densu House, where the deceased student resided.
According to the Ashanti Regional Directorate of the GES, the interdiction of the two teachers is to allow for investigations into the matter.
Ashanti Regional Director of the GES, Mary Owusu Achiaw, said in a media interview that the fate of the two teachers will be determined after the findings of the special committee tasked to probe the matter.
“The Senior Housemaster and the Housemaster have also been asked to step aside for investigations to continue. Whether they will come back or not will depend on the recommendation of the committee but for now, they have been also asked to step aside until the committee finishes its work,” she said.
A statement from the GES said the Regional Director of Education in the Ashanti Region will take over her duties.
Widespread outrage
The death of the student has sparked widespread outrage among social media users who have called for a closure of all schools across Ghana.
A key official in the Akufo-Addo-led adminstration, Gabby Asare Otchere Darko is outraged at the development.
