The University of Ghana (UG) has rejected claims circulating on social media, alleging that it collected over GHS11 million in graduation fees without providing medallions and scroll holders.
In a statement issued on Monday, February 17, UG’s Public Affairs Directorate responded to a report by Joy News and Joy 99.7 FM, calling the claims misleading and inaccurate.
The university clarified that each of the 15,776 graduands paid a GHS500 graduation fee, totaling GHS7,888,000, not the GHS11 million reported. The fee covers essential services such as gown rental, congregation publication, graduation medallion, scroll holder, university souvenir, water, and administrative costs.
UG further explained that while all items were provided, there were procurement delays that affected the distribution of the medallions and scroll holders. A notice dated February 10, 2025, had already been issued to inform graduands about the delay.
The university reassured that the missing items would be made available to graduands in due course.
“It is, therefore, unfortunate for JoyNews to put out a sensational story without recourse to readily available facts. We urge the public to disregard these misleading reports and rely on official University communications for accurate information,” the statement read.
