Three persons have been killed after an illegal mining pit collapsed on them Monday at Amansie Assaman, a community in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti region.

The deceased have been identified as Kwadwo Assiamah, 38, Kwabena Darko, 25 and 22-year-old Ayuma, also from the Northern region.

Assembly Member for the area, Justice Appiah Kubi, said all three bodies have been retrieved and sent to the morgue.

Two others, including a woman are battling life-threatening wounds at the St. Michael’s Hospital at Manso-Agroyesum.

He explained that the area where illegal mining activities take place is located deep in a forest area, which made it easy for the miners to conduct their nefarious activities unnoticed.

He said the incident was unfortunate because personnel from the Operation Vanguard had recently gone to the area to warn the people of the community about the dangers of the illegal mining activities.

Police at Manso-Nkwanta have since commenced investigations into the incident.
