Fresh lawsuit halts NPP parliamentary primaries in Mampong

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary primaries at Mampong in the Ashanti Region have been suspended after 35 party members obtained an injunction against the exercise.

Legal disputes have plagued the Mampong NPP since February 2022 when dissatisfied members challenged the validity of polling station elections.

Although the High Court in Mampong dismissed the case, the plaintiffs, led by Kofi Sarpong, obtained a fresh injunction at the Court of Appeal against the upcoming January 27 parliamentary primaries.

The party has confirmed the suspension, awaiting the court’s decision on the injunction.

“The constituency executives received this fresh document on Tuesday and the national leadership has also been served”, a source familiar with the development told Asaase News. “This means that the election remains suspended until further notice. The application will be moved in the Appeal Court next month”.

The NPP Primaries would be held in constituencies with sitting MPs. It is the party’s last internal election ahead of the 2024 general elections.
