A police officer has been gunned down by armed men at Manso-Akropong in the Ashanti region.

Corporal Bernard Antwi had closed from duty at about 5:30pm on Monday when the incident happened.

Details remain sketchy but reports suggest he visited a mining site at Manso-Dome, near Antoakrom with his colleague— who later returned to his station.

Minutes later, he was reportedly shot in the head by armed men who had bolted with his weapon.

He was pronounced dead by medics at the St. Martin’s Catholic Hospital after he was rushed to the facility by a motor rider.

Police have since mounted a search for the gang who, they say are illegal miners.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command is yet to give an official statement on the development.
