The president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Tuesday 31 August 2021 paid an amount of GHS14,394,397.58 covering the cost of operation and the purchase of surgical equipment for the conjoined twins surgery.

The procedure is expected to commence in the second week of September.

The president made the pledge on behalf of his government a few months ago to take care of the full cost of the surgery at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital).

On Tuesday, through the Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, the cheque was presented to the hospital officials paving way for the procedure to be carried out.

The operation is expected to be carried out over a period of one year. It is the first time such a surgical procedure will be undertaken in Ghana, according to health officials.

The president has also instructed that all resources needed to carry out the procedure should be made available to the hospital without delay.

The lead surgeon for the planned separation of the conjoined twins, Dr Samuel Kaba, said a team of about 160 medical and non medical staff will be involved in the entire process.
