AngloGold Ashanti Ghana Obuasi Mine has demonstrated its commitment to agricultural development by donating items valued at GHc 400,000 to eight districts in the Ashanti Region in support of this year’s National Farmers Day celebrations.

The donated items include eight 40-inch LED TVs, eight Motorised Tricycles (Aboboyaa), 24 pairs of Wellington Boots, 96 pieces of GTP wax print, 8 boxes of Key soap, 32 Knapsack sprayers, 120 machetes, and eight boxes of Sunphosate Glyphosate Weedicide.

These items were specifically allocated to support the overall best farmers and the best female farmers in the beneficiary districts.

The districts benefiting from this donation are Obuasi Municipal, Obuasi East District, Adansi Asokwa, Adansi North, Adansi South, Adansi Akrofuom, Amansie Central, and Bekwai Municipal Assembly, all of which fall within the operational areas of the company.

Edmund Oduro Agyei, Head of Stakeholder Engagement and Land Management at AngloGold Ashanti, Obuasi Mine, presented the items on behalf of the company. He emphasized that supporting Farmers’ Day is part of AngloGold Ashanti’s commitment to agricultural development, aligning with its 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan.

Agyei stated, “As a company that is much concerned about making communities we operate in better off, such donations are done with a firm conviction that agriculture is the mainstay of our people. We believe this will go a long way to encourage our farmers to do more.”

Government commended for PFJ II

Dr. Maurice Jonas Woode, the Chief Executive for the Akrofuom district, commended AngloGold Ashanti for its annual support in organizing successful Farmers’ Day awards in the districts. He expressed gratitude for the donation, noting that it will alleviate some of the financial burdens associated with organizing such programs.

Dr. Woode also commended the government for rolling out Phase 2 of the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) program. This second phase, a five-year master plan, aims to transform agriculture in Ghana through modernization and active private sector participation, building on the successes of the initial program.

Mensah David, the Adansi South District Director of Agriculture, applauded AngloGold Ashanti for its continuous support of agriculture in its operational areas. He emphasized the need for all stakeholders to support farmers, especially given the challenges posed by illegal mining activities that have adversely affected arable lands.

This year’s Farmers Day celebration, the 39th edition, is scheduled for December 1, 2023, with the theme “Delivering Smart Solutions for Sustainable Food Security and Resilience.”
