President Akufo-Addo will on Thursday, January 30, attend a fundraising event for the construction of Ghana’s National Cathedral in Kumasi.
This was announced by the board of trustees of the National Cathedral at a press conference held on Tuesday, January 28, 2020.
Two separate events had already been held in Accra, the nation’s capital and Washington DC in the United States.
Secretary to the board of trustees, Rev Victor Kusi Boateng said the edifice will be point for the Christian community to come together and worship, pray and also to promote deep national conversation on the role of faith in nation building.
He indicated that it will also serve as a point to generate revenue for the country.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the overlord of the Asante Kingdom is expected to attend as Chairman of the occasion.
Rev. Boateng revealed that the event will be held at the Church of Pentecost, A.T Nartey Temple, Bantama in Kumasi.
About the National Cathedral
The National Cathedral of Ghana is a planned interdenominational Christian cathedral scheduled to be built in Accra, the nation’s capital, as part of Ghana’s 60th anniversary celebrations.
The design for the cathedral was unveiled by the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, in March 2018.
Presenting the 2020 budget in Parliament on Wednesday, November 13, 2019, Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta said work on the project will commence next year.
“The Board of Trustees and the Secretariat have been established, and preparatory works for the construction of the Cathedral have begun. Procurement processes to select a contractor are expected to conclude by the end of the year and construction is expected to begin in March 2020,” he told Parliament.
Though the construction of the cathedral has been met with criticism, the President said he took solace from the spiritual credentials of fellow supporters of the project.
“I am comforted in my decision by the vast numbers of enthusiastic supporters of this project, whose spiritual dimension is limitless.”
