Ashanti: Six referred to KATH after accident claims 13 lives

13 people were killed while eleven others got injured in an accident at Ohene Nkwanta near Konongo in the Ashanti Region, officials said in a statement.

The dead comprises nine males and four females, police at the Konongo Division said on Monday.

The accident which occured on Sunday at about 10:40 p.m., local time involved an Accra-Kumasi bound passenger bus with registration number GT 5597-19 and a Cargo truck carrying goods from Tamale to Accra.

A Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) Commander at the Konongo Divisional Police Headquarters, DSP/Mr Stephen Paa Yeboah told reporters that the victims who perished have been sent to the Steward Hospital morgue at Yawkwei near Konongo.

He said the accident may have been caused by wrongful overtaken, over-speeding and poor visibility on that stretch.

DSP Stephen Paa Yeboah wants commuters to observe road traffic regulations on that stretch.

A visit to the Konongo Government Hospital saw medics racing with time to rescue the perishing.

An administrator of the hospital told dailymailgh.com that six people had to be referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for further treatment.

“That of a girl under the age of five is quite critical”, said. “For now those with minor injury have been treated and discharged”.

A team of personnel from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) have been to the accident scene.

NRSA says it is concerned about the increasing spate of carnages on the Accra-Kumasi highway adding it could be worse as the yuletide nears.
