Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the Chairperson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has vehemently stated that his party is a victim of violence orchestrated by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Addressing the media on Monday (8 January), Nketia asserted that the NPP is the primary source of disruptions to the nation’s electoral peace.

He called on stakeholders to hold President Akufo-Addo and his associates accountable for the alleged violence perpetuated by the NPP. He stressed that the NDC, often on the receiving end of such violence, is compelled to defend itself only after being initially attacked by the NPP.

“We are the victims of violence, and yet when the moral and civil societies speak, they either engage in equalisation or urge the NDC, the victims, to ensure peaceful elections. But we say never again,” stated Nketia on January 8, 2024.

Nketia expressed the NDC’s commitment to working towards a peaceful Ghana while simultaneously rejecting a repeat of the violence that marred the 2020 elections.

Additionally, the NDC Chairperson raised concerns about President Akufo-Addo’s public commitment to hand over power to a successor within the NPP. Nketia accused Akufo-Addo of undermining the sovereign will of Ghanaians by expressing his intention to select his successor rather than letting the people decide.

“Akufo-Addo must be called out to abandon his partisan commitment. Akufo-Addo is simply undermining the sovereign will of Ghanaians to choose who our President must be. Sovereignty resides with the people, and only the people must bestow the right to lead on politicians, not Akufo-Addo.”
