Bawku: Police arrest notorious robber with AK47 rifle

The Police in Bawku in the Upper East Region have seized a service rifle and live ammunition from a 25-year-old notorious armed robber.

Issaka Salifu, popularly known as ‘Niga’, was arrested by some members of Kpalori, a community in the Bawku Municipality just before 11pm on Friday, January 24, 2020.

The suspect had been on police wanted list and is said to be involved in series of robbery and murder cases which is under investigation.

Police say the weapons retrieved include an AK47 rifle with service number 56-23713273 and about 20 live rounds of ammunition.

He has since been re-arrested and detained as police prepare him to face court in the coming days.

There have been growing concerns over the proliferation of small arms in Ghana, which many have blamed for the increasing spate of violent crimes in the country.

Alexander Afenyo Markin, a Ghanaian parliamentarian, is urging the state to tighten existing legislation on the importation, acquisition and use of small arms in the West African nation.

About 1.1 million unregistered firearms in circulation in Ghana.

The National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA) had also revealed that about 2.3 million small arms are in civilian hands, according to a survey conducted by the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) in 2014.
