Convoy of Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament involved in accident; outrider killed

Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin has lost one of his police outriders, Chief Inspector Abednego Kaakyire, local media and the police confirmed on Friday.

Abednego was part of an advanced security team of the Speaker en route to Wa, the Upper West Regional capital about 690km from the national capital Accra.

His motorbike collided head-on with a Nissan Sentra vehicle which was on a top speed in an attempt to overtake an articulated truck.

The front of the truck had burst into flames with the Nissan saloon car badly damaged dailymailgh.com visited the scene.

“I was trying to make way for the convoy; suddenly I saw this car on top speed trying to overtake me. He suddenly collided head-on with the rider. He was dragged underneath my truck which eventually burst into flames”, narrated driver of the articulated truck, Mustapha Azure.

Head of Public Affairs at Ghana’s Parliament, Kate Addo told Joy FM that Mr Bagbin was not affected.

Two occupants of the Nissan saloon car who sustained minor injuries are currently receiving treatment at the Juaso Government Hospital, police say.

They were traveling from the Kumasi-Nkawkaw section of the Accra-Kumasi highway.Police at the Konongo Divisional Command were towing the vehicles to allow free flow of traffic.

Investigations have started.
