Recipients of Ghana’s first batch of COVID vaccines will include frontline health workers and the security agencies, officials say.
A former Deputy Minister of Health Dr Bernard Okoe-Boye who made this disclosure told Accra-based Joy FM that a technical committee has been set up to look into the delivery strategy.
“Health workers are high on the list, and secondly, the security service because of their interactions with the citizens”, said Dr Okoe-Boye as reported by Joy FM.
“I also know that the elderly who can prove underlying conditions like heart diseases, then there are transport operators and people who engage in public activities like teachers, who have to mingle with kids”, he said.
His comments follows a surge in the country’s COVID-19 caseload which currently stands at almost 60, 000 with 361 fatalities as of Saturday, January 23.
The government earlier announced of plans to procure vaccines for the country following the discovery of a new strain at the country’s arrivals in the national capital Accra.
According to Dr Okoe-Boye the vaccines from the Covax facility; coronavirus access platform are limited to 20 percent of the country’s total population.
The first consignment, the former Deputy Health Minister noted, will arrive by the end of the first quarter adding that the government is working to procure more to cater for the remaining 80 percent of the population.
“We are also exploring the bilateral route… Ghana is looking at buying some of the vaccines. We are looking at it very seriously, he stated.
