Telecom giant MTN Ghana is set to stock the National Blood Bank with at least 4000 units of blood as it revives the ‘Save a Life’ blood donation campaign.
The annual exercise gives MTN staff, trade partners and the general public the opportunity to show love on Valentine‘s Day by donating a unit of blood to save lives.
In the Ashanti Region, the ‘Save A Life’ team comprising staff of MTN and the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital held a similar exercise in second-cycle schools in the capital Kumasi to raise about 300 units of blood. Donors from the Kumasi Girls Senior High School, Osei Kyeretwie Senior High and Kumasi Senior High Technical School took part in the exercise.
Head of Technical for the Northern Sector at MTN Charles Osei Akoto indicated that MTN prioritizes the health of its customers thus the need to contribute to good health care for its customers through the exercise. He also acknowledged the efforts of all the individuals who have over the years taken the initiative to voluntarily donate blood with the sole objective of saving lives.
“The common objective for this exercise is that MTN is a company that considers the people as part of the business because without customers there is no business, therefore we have great concern for the customer and for that matter their health is also key”, Akoto said as he urged other corporate organisations and individuals to make it a priority to support the blood donation drive.
The Blood Programme Manager at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Christian Oppong Mensah commended MTN Ghana as well as other donors for their contribution to restocking the country’s blood bank used in saving lives.
“We are grateful to MTN for sustaining this exercise since 2011 and sponsoring same. This has allowed us to restock blood and for the three schools that agreed to allow students to voluntarily donate blood we are grateful knowing that this exercise would enable hospitals to be in a position to give blood when persons need the same when they are sick,’’ he said.
The “Save a Life” project, an initiative by the MTN Ghana Foundation, is an annual blood donation event that takes place on Valentine’s Day. It offers MTN employees and other people the chance to donate blood that will be used to replenish the National Blood Bank and other regional hospitals.
This project was established in 2011 in response to appeals from the National Blood Transfusion Service to solicit voluntary donations in order to refill depleted blood supplies, which were at critically low levels. The donation has resulted in the collection of around 20,000 pints of blood over the years.
MTN Ghana was recognized for its efforts as it was named the top corporate blood donor in 2013, the second-highest corporate donor in 2014, and one of the highest corporate donors in 2015.
