S/R: Lone-ranger policeman kills suspected highway robber

An on-duty policeman shot and killed an armed robber during a shootout on the Tamale-Buipe Highway.

The suspect was part of a 10-member gang who had mounted roadblocks and were robbing unsuspecting passengers onboard a Bawku bound bus on the Sawaba-Mpaha junction.

Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson, Sargent Owusu Agyekum confirmed Wednesday’s incident to dailymailgh.com.

“They ordered the passengers to lie down in an attempt to rob them. One of our men who was in a vehicle escorting them was also stopped by the robbers. They engaged the police officer in a shootout and the process, the policeman was able to gun down one of the robbers”, the police spokesperson narrated.

The suspect was pronounced dead when he was rushed to the Buipe Hospital. His body has since been deposited at the Tamale Teaching Hospital for autopsy.

His accomplices, however, fled the scene upon sensing danger, the police spokesperson said.

The police also retrieved a locally manufactured gun and one AA ammunition as exhibits.

The police said it has begun investigations into the incident as it urged residents to seek police escort when embarking on such journeys.

Suspected robber lynched after attacking mobile money operator

In a related development, some residents of Karaga lynched a suspected armed robber to death on Thursday evening after a mobile money vendor was robbed.

According to police, five men on motorbikes attacked the vendor and robbed him off an unspecified amount of money.

One of the robbers was unable to escape and was beaten and burned alive in a drain by a mob.

As police hunt for the robbers, the Gushegu Police Command is also looking for persons involved in the lynching.
