Michael Essien was at Cobham recently, seeing some old friends, but it was with a new group that he made a notable impression.

The Daily Express have the story from Erin Cuthbert of the ladies team, who revealed that when Essien was in town for Soccer Aid, he took part in a rondo session with them, and not half heartedly either, by the sound of things.

Cuthbert takes up the story:

“He was not holding back,” the Scotland star said.

“He was flying all around the place and doing nutmegs,” she added.

That’s our boy.

To be honest, nobody should have been surprised by this. The guy is an absolute hero, and a true competitor. He had a series of truly nasty knee injuries but never let himself lose that fire, and clearly retirement hasn’t quenched it either.

Once you have that hunger, you never lose it, as Michael has ably proven.

We’d love to see a player like him back in our midfield now – or maybe we just need him on the training ground, getting stuck in and reminding everyone that it’s not all just pretty passing patterns.
