An 11-year-old girl and one other are the latest victims to have died in an accident on New Year’s Eve, in Ghana’s Eastern region bringing the death toll to nine, officials confirmed on Saturday.

Seven people died on the spot in the ghastly accident which occurred on the Abusakope road near Kpone.

“The death toll has risen to nine. Six of them have been treated and discharged and three are on admission”, Francis Gomado, spokesman for the Eastern Regional Police Command said.

The accident involved a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus and a stationary tipper truck.

“The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus ran into the tipper truck loaded with sand and parked at the edge of the road,” the police official said.

Bodies of the dead were deposited at the Akuse Government Hospital morgue.

“The Akuse District Police Command is currently investigating the accident case,” Gomado added.
