President Akufo-Addo has reaffirmed his commitment to ending the illegal mining menace stressing that the government’s efforts to deal with galamsey have been unprecedented in Ghana’s history.

“We are here to eradicate galamsey and surely, it would be eradicated,” he said.“No government has shown that resilience in the fight against galamsey”.

The President made these remarks when he paid a courtesy call to the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at the Manhyia Palace as part of his four-day working visit to the Ashanti Region.

There has been a widespread campaign against the illegal mining menace which has seen many forest reserves and water bodies devastated.

Security agencies arrested suspected Chinese illegal miner Aisha Huang and at least four other accomplices who are facing the court for violating the country’s mining laws.

It appears the government is also not leaving its officials off the hook. The District Chief Executive for Bosome Freho in the Ashanti Region Hon Yaw Danso is also under investigation over his involvement in illegal mining.

He has since been suspended.
