Authorities say investigations will be launched to uncover the circumstances surrounding recent women killings recorded in the Ashanti Region.

Regional Minister and Chairman of the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) Simon Osei-Mensah however says the situation has not affected the peace and stability being experienced in the region.

At least eight women have been killed under bizarre circumstances in parts of the region in the last two months, the latest being the gruesome murder of an 18-year-old at Anwiankwanta in the Bekwai Municipality. Although the police have yet to update the public on these separate incidents, concerns about the safety of inhabitants have been raised.

But speaking on the sidelines of this year’s International Peace Day organized by the Peace Council Mr Osei-Mensah said although most of these incidents are homicide cases, a thorough probe would inform available interventions to deal with such matters.

“Recently there has been an ugly security threat that is raising its head, mainly people killing women which we need to nib in the bud as soon as possible. Some of them are just relationship crises… But there are some of them that we are trying to find the reasons behind those things. For instance, the one that recently happened at Anwiankwanta, you cannot just say that they are relationship problems, there could be more to it. So, we have to investigate all of these and come to a conclusion,” he said.

He however assured inhabitants of improved security to maintain the peace in the region.

In 2021, a Public Safety and Crime report revealed that the Ashanti Region recorded the highest number of murder cases out of over 200 murder cases recorded last year, across the country.

The report published by the Bureau of Public Safety (BPS) said the region recorded 23 per cent of all homicide cases reported across the country last year.

According to the Bureau, violent crimes reported in 2021 was 531 cases, an increase of 40.8% as compared to 377 cases in 2020. Its associated deaths also increased by 53.7 percent.

The report also revealed that the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions reported the highest incidents of armed robberies last year – each region reported 19% of over 150 armed robbery cases in 2021.
