Columbus Crew has announced the acquisition of Ghanaian midfielder David Accam from the Philadelphia Union.

Accam, 28, is in his fifth Major League Soccer season and has made 109 appearances (83 starts) while scoring 38 goals and providing 17 assists since joining the League. He has nine caps with the Black Stars.

“We want to welcome David Accam to Columbus Crew SC as David is a fast, dynamic player and a proven attacking threat in MLS,” said Crew SC President Tim Bezbatchenko. “In addition to having experience in the League, we believe David’s specific skillset will help us bolster the attack of our current roster and we look forward to his contributions to the Club this season.”

Accam joins Crew SC from the Philadelphia Union, where he played from 2018-2019. During his time in Philadelphia, Accam made 31 regular-season appearances (17 starts), while scoring five goals and providing two assists. Prior to joining the Union, Accam spent three seasons with the Chicago Fire from 2015-2017, making 78 regular-season appearances (66 starts) as well as registering 33 goals and 15 assists. The 28-year-old scored at least nine goals during each of his three seasons with Chicago, tallying 10 goals and two assists in 2015 – his MLS debut season – and recorded nine goals and five assists in 2016, en route to winning the Chicago Fire’s Most Valuable Player Award and the Chicago Fire’s Golden Boot Award both years. In 2017, his last season with the Fire, Accam registered an MLS career-high 14 goals and eight assists.

Prior to joining MLS, Accam, a graduate of the Right to Dream Academy, spent 2012 with Ostersund of Sweden’s Third Division before signing with Helsingborg of Sweden’s topflight. Accam played for Helsingborg from 2012-2014, making 81 appearances across all competitions, while tallying 38 goals and 11 assists. Accam’s tenure with Heldingborg included a two-leg series in 2012 against Celtic of Scotland’s topflight in UEFA Champions League Qualifying, with the Ghanaian featuring in each of the matches. Additionally, Accam made six appearances in the 2012-2013 UEFA Europa League campaign, tallying one assist during a 2-2 home draw against FC Twente Enschede of the Netherlands (October 4, 2012) in a Group Stage match.

At the international level, Accam has earned nine caps with the Ghana National Team, making his debut in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations during a Group Stage match against Senegal on January 19. The midfielder scored his first goal with the Black Stars during a 7-1 home victory over Mauritania in an Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier on June 14, 2015.
