KNUST gang-rape: Policeman, student granted ¢80k bail each, case adjourned to Sept. 19

A High Court has granted an ¢80,000 bail each to the policeman and a student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology accused of raping a Level 100 student of the school.

Court documents show that the accused persons, Lance Corporal Frank Adu Poku and Joel Osei Owusu were ordered to present two sureties with one being a close relation as part of the bail conditions. Another must be a government worker earning net monthly salary of not less than ¢1000.

This development emerged on Tuesday (September 6) at the Asokore Mampong District Court where the substantive case is being heard. The court however adjourned the case to September 19 after prosecutors and lawyers for one of the accused persons were recorded absent.

Lance Corporal Frank Adu Poku, 28, with the Bomso Police Station in Kumasi and his accomplice, Joel Osei Owusu – a 20-year-old final year student of the university were arrested on July 19, after they forcibly had unprotected sexual intercourse with the victim.

They are facing the court on counts of Conspiracy to commit rape and rape: Contrary to Sections 23(1) and 97 of the Criminal Offences Act 1960 (ACT 29).

The Inspector General of Police immediately ordered the interdiction of the police officer to face prosecution. The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology condemned the act as it confirms the victim was being given the needed psychological attention.
