George Ricketts-Hagan, Cape Coast South MP, alleges GH¢11 billion in hidden taxes within the 2024 government budget, promising exposure by the Minority caucus in the upcoming days.
Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta unveils the 2024 government budget in Parliament, revealing plans for eight tax breaks set to be implemented the following year.
The budget includes extensions such as zero-rated VAT on locally manufactured African prints for two more years, import duty waivers on electric vehicles for public transportation for 8 years, and exemptions on various items.
However, Ricketts-Hagan cautions against celebration, claiming that the budget conceals deliberate and burdensome taxes in an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News.
“We know that there’s GH¢11 billion in taxes [in the budget], but it is hidden, so we will unravel it… In a couple of days, we will unwrap it and show where they have been hidden.
“…They have been disguised, and that was the whole idea… So we have to open it up,” he said on Wednesday, November 16, 2023.
Dr Stephen Amoah, the deputy minister of trades on the other hand, said that the minority and the Cape Coast South MP were looking for nonexistent issues to criticize the government for.
