Ghanaian actress Bibi Bright has left South African mobile network MTN to that of Glo from Nigeria in solidarity with Nigerians being attacked in the Rainbow Nation.
In an Instagram post, Bright said: “Just left the Glo office! Ported my number from MTN (South African) company to Glo (my brother Nigerian) company.! Today it’s Nigerians, tomorrow is maybe Ghanaians in SA been killed! Let’s not wait till it’s our turn!”
She added: “Ghanaian celebrities throw your weight behind Nigeria! The pain these videos caused me as a Ghanaian, I can imagine what our brothers and sisters in Nigeria are going through! No one deserves to die this way. This is too much! For South Africans to do this to us? This isn’t their first time! It will not be their last!”
She is also urging all her celebrity friends to ”entreat their fan base to port from Mtn to Glo!”
No Ghanaian has so far been attacked in the xenophobic insurrection in South Africa, Ghana’s Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Charles Owiredu has said.
Nigeria celebrities such as Burna Boy and Tiwa Savage have declared they would not step foot in South Africa again due to the xenophobic attacks.
In a series of tweets, the 28-year-old Burna Boy, who was Apple Music’s “Up Next” artist in July, said that he had not been in the country since 2017 because of his “own xenophobic experiences at the hands of South Africans”.
Meanwhile, South Africa’s High Commissioner to Ghana Lulu Xingwana has attributed the latest xenophobic attacks in South Africa to poverty.
She is, therefore, urging African governments to provide jobs for their citizens with the hope that would dissuade them from “flocking” into South Africa for greener pastures.
“…This starts from poverty,” Xingwana said of the attacks on Accra-based Starr FM. “All of our countries must create jobs and opportunities for their people so that we don’t all flock to one country because one country would not be able to cope. If all of us were coming to Ghana, would you cope? Would you?”
