An Accra Circuit Court has commenced the trial of two suspects whose activities allegedly caused panic among dollar account holders to withdraw their savings last year.

Jefferey Eppirim Nyame, the blogger, is facing trial for publishing false news while Jeremiah Kobina Egyebeng, the IT professional has also been charged with abetment of crime. His alleged accomplices are at large.

The accused persons have pleaded not guilty to the charges and are on GHC20,000 bail with two sureties, each.

The court presided over by Mr Isaac Addo took evidence of Police Detective Sergeant Nach Kyeremeh of the Cybercrime Unit of the Ghana Police Service as he was cross-examined by defence counsel, Mr Gregory Kwadwo Asiedu.

In his evidence before the court, the police officer admitted knowing the accused persons and it was the Cyber Security Patrol Team that saw the publication on the internet.

The court also heard that the Bank of Ghana also made verbal complaints about the activities of the accused persons which had caused panic withdrawal of customers at various banks.

The witness further told the court that police investigations led to the arrest of the suspects. The officer however denied claims that the suspects were being targeted leaving the original source of the publication.

In the year 2022, the suspects were picked up after the Bank of Ghana alerted the police over the said publication. It followed President Akufo-Addo’s caution against unscrupulous persons churning out false information about the country’s economy.

The matter has since been adjourned to 18 October 2023.
