The Management of Adom TV has rendered an unqualified apology to the director of Urban Roads, Alhaji Abass Mohammed Awolu, for wrongly associating him with an alleged bribery scandal linked to the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Prior to the apology, lawyer for the Urban Roads Director, Ralph Poku-Adusei, wrote to the management of the Multimedia Group Limited, demanding same. According to the letter of the lawyers, on the 1st day of December 2020, without any factual basis, Adom TV station aired a video allegedly of the President of the Republic receiving a bribe which was shown during airtime bought by the National Democratic Congress (NDC)”.

“In the discussion that ensued during the airing of the said video by a member of the NDC party by name Sammy Gyamfi, also aired on the same date, your outfit caused to be broadcasted, some unprintable words, to describe our client as the beneficiary of the alleged bribery. In other words, the information conveyed by the broadcast, in their natural and ordinary meaning, sought to suggest that, our client, by the alleged bribery, sent the persons captured in the said video to carry out the activities in order for him to be retained as the Director of the Ghana urban Roads. This is completely false and totally needless, to say the least” the letter stated.

“In light of the foregoing, our client instructs us to demand, which we hereby do, that, using the same medium, your outfit cause to be retracted, the words used to describe him in the said broadcast and also; render an unqualified apology to him personally for the harm caused to his reputation. We trust that your outfit will adhere to our client’s request herein stated to obviate any need for legal redress” the letter further stated.

The Apology

In response to the demand notice of lawyers of Alhaji Awolu, Adom TV took to their prime time morning show on the 14th of January 2021, to register their apology to Alhaji Abass Mohammed Awolu.

“On 1st December 2020, Adom TV aired a video allegedly of the then Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in October 2016 receiving a bribe which was shown during airtime bought by the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Management of Adom TV could not verify the authenticity of the video” the host of the morning show on Adom TV stated.

“In issuing an apology to the President, management omitted to include Alhaji Abass Mohammed Awolu, the Director of Urban Roads who was also mentioned in the said video. Adom TV apologies for any embarrassment the video may have caused Alhaji Abass Mohammed Awolu” the host of the show added.
