Martin Amidu’s resignation as the Special Prosecutor was shocking, the Board Chair of the Office of the Special Prosecutor has said.
According to Linda Ofori Kwafo, Amidu did not inform the board of his decision before pending his resignation letter to the President.
“If you take a closer look at the letter of the SP, you will realize that the board was not copied. Some of the challenges that have been mentioned as the basis, we are aware of it but it came as a surprise to me as the chair and also the board as a whole,” she told Citi TV on Wednesday.
Amidu resigned from his position on Monday, citing political interference with his work.
Mr. Amidu was tasked by President Akufo-Addo to conduct a corruption risk assessment on the deal amid mounting pressure from the opposition parties and civil society groups to have the deal aborted.
“I should not be ordinarily announcing my resignation to the public myself but the traumatic experience I went through from 20th October 2020 to 2nd November 2020, when I conveyed in a thirteen (13) page letter the conclusions and analysis of the risk of corruption and anti-corruption assessment on the Report on the Agyapa Royalties Limited Transactions and Other Matters related Thereto…cautions against not bringing my resignation as Special Prosecutor with immediate to the Ghanaian public and the world”, Amidu said on Monday.
President Akufo-Addo accepted his resignation.
In an acceptance letter, the Chief of Staff, Frema Osei Opare conveyed the President’s appreciation to the former Attorney General under the Atta-Mills government.
